📸 7 Tips to Prepare for a Fun & Relaxed Outdoor Family Photoshoot
Because stress-free smiles are the best kind! Hi there! I'm Xenia – your friendly, adventure-loving photographer who believes that family photos should be as fun and carefree as the moments they capture. If you’ve booked an outdoor family shoot (or you’re thinking about it), I’ve got you covered!
Here are 7 super simple tips to help you feel totally ready – and maybe even excited – for your upcoming family photoshoot.
1. Let’s talk outfits (but don’t panic!)
You don’t need matching white shirts and jeans (unless you really want to 😄). Pick colors that go well together – think earthy tones, soft pastels, or warm neutrals. Or if you want it a bit more colourful make sure it fits with the background, always ask your photographer for advise. Avoid big logos or loud prints. The goal? You want the focus to be on your family, not your shirt.
Tip: Lay everyone’s outfits on the bed and see how they look together – like a little mood board!
2. Timing is everything – hello golden hour!
My favorite time to shoot is either early in the morning or right before sunset. Why? Because the light is soft, warm, and just magical. No squinty eyes, no harsh shadows – just that dreamy glow that makes everything look better.

3. Snacks save the day (yes, really)
If you’re bringing little ones, snacks are your secret weapon. A happy, fed kid = more smiles and fewer meltdowns. Bring their favorites (non-messy ones are best!) and maybe even a surprise treat for after.
4. Make it a mini adventure
We’re not posing for yearbook photos here. We’re running through fields, climbing over rocks, laughing, cuddling, maybe even barefoot in the grass. Let your kids be wild. Let your partner crack jokes. That’s when the real magic happens. We're collecting those small sweet moments.

5. Don’t say “Smile!” (trust me)
Telling kids (or partners 😅) to smile often backfires. Instead, play, joke, tickle, or whisper silly things. I’ll guide you through it all, and we’ll capture genuine moments – not forced grins.

6. Bring the essentials
Pack a small bag with:
- Water
- Wet wipes
- Hairbrush
- A cozy layer (for when the sun goes down)
- Maybe even a favorite toy
- blanket
- another set of clothes, as we're still outside and it could get dirty
You’ll feel more relaxed knowing you’re prepared.
7. Trust the process
Every family is different – and that’s the best part. Some kids will run wild, some will be shy, some will surprise you with the biggest giggles ever. I’ve seen it all, and I promise: we’ll create something beautiful together. You'll be surprised, a lot of kids like it in the end and want to do it again.
That’s it!
Your only job? Show up, be yourselves, and let me take care of the rest. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but the best photos are always the ones where you forget the camera is even there.
A lot photographers don't post faces of kids to respect the families, if they wish so. But they can would show you a portfolio, if you ask for one.
