10 Red Flags to Watch Out for When Booking a Photographer
Booking a photographer is kind of like dating. You’re looking for someone who gets you, who makes you feel comfortable, and who delivers exactly what you’re hoping for (maybe even more). Whether it's for a couple shoot, a dreamy elopement, or just some badass travel content, choosing the right person matters—a lot.
After years of working as a photographer and also being in front of the lens during my own travels and projects, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the “oh no, what is this edit?”
Here are 10 red flags to keep on your radar when you’re looking for the one (your photographer, that is 😉):
1. 📸 No Clear Portfolio
If a photographer doesn’t have a website, an Instagram, or somewhere you can scroll through their recent work—major red flag. You deserve to see their style, vibe, and consistency before trusting them with your memories.
2. 🎨 Filter Overload / Super Heavy Editing
If every photo is drowning in filters or looks more like a painting than a photo, it might be hiding poor lighting or weak composition. Look for natural skin tones, cohesive colors, and editing that enhances—not disguises—the real moments.
3. 💸 Prices That Are Too Cheap
Sure, we all love a good deal. But if the price feels suspiciously low, it could mean inexperience, outdated gear, or a lack of professionalism. Quality photography is an investment—and trust me, it’s so worth it.

4. 📱 Slow or Vague Communication
If it takes forever to get a reply, or you’re getting super short, unclear answers, that’s a red flag. You want someone who’s excited to talk with you, who keeps you in the loop, and who makes you feel like a priority—not a chore.
5. 📝 No Contract or Written Agreement
Always, always get things in writing. A legit photographer will send over a contract or at least a written breakdown of what’s included, what the timeline looks like, cancellation policies, etc. It protects both of you.
6. 🌟 No Reviews or Testimonials
What do past clients say? Can you find reviews on their site, Google, or Instagram highlights? If there’s radio silence on this front, be cautious. Happy clients usually love to rave about a good experience.

7. 🎁 Unclear Deliverables
How many photos will you get? In what format? How soon after the shoot? If the answers are fuzzy or non-existent, that’s a no-go. Transparency = trust.
8. 🧭 They Don’t Ask Anything About You
The best photographers want to understand you. Your story, your vibe, what you’re envisioning. If they don’t ask questions or seem disinterested in your preferences, that’s a sign they’re probably not invested in making it your shoot.
9. 🤷♀️ Only Offer Poses—Not Direction
Feeling awkward in front of the camera? Same. A good photographer will guide you through it all—suggesting natural movements, fun prompts, and little moments that bring out the real you. If someone just says “stand there and smile,” run.

10. ✨ No Vibe Check
At the end of the day, trust your gut. If something feels off—or you just don’t vibe with their energy—it’s okay to keep looking. The connection you have with your photographer totally affects how you feel during the shoot and how the photos turn out.
Final Thoughts: You Deserve Better Than “Meh”
Photos are more than pixels—they’re memories, stories, feelings. And you deserve someone who treats them that way. So don’t settle. Ask questions, trust your intuition, and choose a photographer who feels like a teammate, not just a service provider.
Whether you’re booking someone for a wild mountain adventure, a beach sunset session, or a cozy in-home shoot—these tips will help you avoid the red flags and find someone who truly gets you.
