An Unforgettable Journey into Paradise: The Besseggen Ridge Hike in Norway
Experience one of Norway's most beautiful and challenging hikes: the Besseggen Ridge Hike. This iconic Norway hike features a steep ascent requiring some coordination, but the effort is well worth it. The ridge hike not only offers breathtaking views but also an unforgettable adventure. It's no wonder it's so popular. We opted for a round trip instead of taking the ferry, allowing us to fully enjoy the natural beauty. In this post, you'll find everything you need to know about the Besseggen Ridge Hike.
Important Information About the Hike
- Duration: 9–10 hours
- Length: 27 km
- Elevation Gain: 1280 m
- Difficulty: High due to length and elevation
- Dogs: We saw several large dogs
- Children: Only suitable for very experienced children due to the steep ridge
Parking and Shuttle Bus
There is a parking lot where you can park for 25€ with motorhomes and 10€ with cars for 24 hours, allowing you to sleep there. From the parking lot, a shuttle bus included in the parking fee runs every 15 minutes to the start of the hike. You can also park at the bottom, next to the lake, but only for a maximum of two hours. There is a small kiosk with expensive snacks and drinks, so bringing your own food is advisable.

The Besseggen Ridge Hike
Most hikers take the ferry for 17€ (half price for children) to Memurubu and hike back to the parking spot. We chose to avoid the crowd and started hiking in the opposite direction. This way, we had most of the trail to ourselves. The first descent was a bit busier, but afterwards, we enjoyed the peaceful solitude.
On the Besseggen Ridge
The climb is rocky and steep but rewards you with increasingly beautiful views over Lake Gjende. The ridge flattens out at the top but also becomes narrower. Don't worry, it's not as dangerous as it looks. There's plenty of space for everyone to ascend and descend simultaneously. From here, you have an impressive view of the dark blue Bessvatnet to your right and the turquoise Lake Gjende to your left. The nature here offers a breathtaking array of colors, especially when viewed from the summit. The red small spots on the photo are people.
Camping at Memurubu
You can camp at Memurubu, either by bringing your own tent or booking a spot. This allows you to split the hike over two days. It's a beautiful place and a fantastic spot to camp. If I had known about this option, I would have definitely considered it. You can have a look at the place here: Memurubu Turisthytte
Walking Back from Memurubu to the Car
The way back is very easy, with barely any elevation gain. The path follows alongside the lake, perfect for taking a dip after the exhausting hike. Just keep in mind that the shuttle bus doesn't run all day, so make sure you return in time.
