The drive includes narrow switchbacks but is manageable due to the low traffic. Although there's no official parking lot, you can find parking spots along the road, including a turnaround spot at the end.
Bøttejuv - The Hidden Gem Above the Sognefjord
Bøttejuv is a hidden gem offering several hikes in the area. The trail starts on a relatively flat, wide path, perfect for warming up. As you progress, the path narrows and steepens, leading through a forest teeming with seasonal mushrooms. Beyond the tree line, you'll encounter abundant blueberries and lingonberries. The path continues leftward, requiring traversal over larger rocks. It's poorly marked, so keep an eye out and stay left. You might even spot mountain quails.
At the cliff's edge, you're rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the turquoise Sognefjord. Be cautious at the top; not all stones are stable, and the wind can be strong. From here, you can see Årdalstangen and enjoy views of Jotunheimen National Park. Other nearby hikes include Norway's highest mountain or the Besseggen Ridge. Alternatively, visit Vettisfossen, Norway's highest waterfall.
The Return Journey
The descent can be steep with loose stones, requiring good surefootedness, especially if it rains. Otherwise, the descent is manageable.
