Bruny Island Travel Guide— An Adventurous Photographer’s Take

Bruny Island is one of those magical places where the mountains meet the sea, wildlife is everywhere, and the food is as fresh as it gets. It’s an adventurer’s paradise, with stunning beaches, scenic hikes, and some of the best sunsets and sunrises you’ll ever witness. If you’re planning a trip to Tasmania, Bruny Island deserves a night or two on your itinerary — trust me, you won’t regret it.

🛥️ How to Get There

Getting to Bruny Island is super easy:

  • Ferry from Kettering, Tasmania — runs every 20 minutes.
  • First ferry: 6:10 AM (Mon-Fri), 7:10 AM (Sat-Sun) — Last ferry: 7:00 PM.
  • Duration: Only 15 minutes.
  • No booking required — just pay on arrival: $50.60 return ticket for a car (passengers free).
  • Return anytime — no set day or time required.

🛠️ Essentials on the Island

If you need supplies, head to Adventure Bay’s General Store:

  • 💧 Water refill station — $2 to fill up as much as you need.
  • ⛽ Gas swap and refill.
  • Only one petrol station on the island — make sure to top up before heading to remote spots.

📍 Best Spots to Explore

  • Hanssons Beach — Crystal-clear water, white sand, and way fewer people than Adventure Bay.
  • Cloudy Bay — Great for surfing, swimming, or just chilling on the beach.
  • The Neck Reserve Lookout — Panoramic views and a prime penguin-spotting location. Visit at dusk (peak season: Oct-Nov, but they’re around from July to March).
  • The Brunybaker — Fresh sourdough loaves for $8, available every morning at 9 AM. It’s insanely tasty, and you can pay via bank transfer — no cash needed.

⛰️ Best Hikes

  • Cloudy Bay Circuit: 14 km loop, 300m elevation, approx. 3.5 hours. Bring your swimsuit and keep an eye out for snakes and echidnas.
  • Fluted Cape Trek: 7 km, 313m elevation, around 2 hours. Go anticlockwise for the best views.

🚐 Campgrounds

All campgrounds are $13 per night, equipped with toilets, and fill up fast — so get there early!

  • Pines Camp (4WD recommended)
  • Cloudy Campspot (4WD recommended)
  • Jetty Campground
  • Neck Reserve Campground — Bonus: penguins and seals nearby.

Highlight

Have a look at the smallest Penguins in the world. They only weight a kilo and life up to 7-9 years. It's the only breed in Australia and they're so adorable. It was a huge highlight for me and I'll never forget that.

🎫 National Park Passes

I highly recommend getting the Tasmanian Holiday Park Pass:

  • $89 for 2 months — covers Bruny Island and most national parks across Tasmania.
  • Valid for 1 car (with unlimited passengers).
  • Best place to buy: visitor centers.

Considering most parks are $41/day, this pass is a steal if you’re exploring beyond Bruny.
