The Adventurous Festvågtind Hike: A Must-Do in the Lofoten Islands

The Festvågtind hike in the Lofoten Islands is one of those breathtaking adventures you’ll remember for a lifetime. Challenging yet rewarding, this hike offers an incredible view, especially of the charming village of Henningsvær. While the journey is demanding, it's absolutely worth the effort, particularly if you make it to the first summit, which is achievable for most hikers. Wherever you are on the mountain, you’ll be treated to spectacular scenery all around. However, for those seeking the famous rock ledge, prepare for some steep climbs and scrambling. We highly recommend this part of the trail only for experienced hikers with some climbing skills.

Parking

There are a few parking spots a little further from the start of the hike. You can park either on the right side in a small bay along the road or on the left just before the bridge to Henningsvær. Both options are free.

The Festvågtind Hike

The starting point of the hike is somewhat hidden along the roadside, between the trees. Walk along the mountain side of the road until you spot a small trail that winds its way between the trees, in the direction opposite of the bridge. This is where the adventure begins.

Right from the start, the ascent is steep and continues this way all the way up. You’ll need to scramble over large rocks at first, followed by a muddy path. Make sure to stick to the left side of the trail, as the right side can turn into a stream when it rains. The trail can become incredibly slippery, so hold onto tree trunks or bring trekking poles for stability. On our hike, the weather completely closed in at times, making visibility nearly zero, but don’t get discouraged! The weather in this area changes every 30 minutes or so.

As you reach the final stretch to the summit, you’ll need to scramble up some rocks, but once you make it to the top, the stunning view over Henningsvær will make every step worthwhile.

Instagram-Worthy Spot – The Rock Ledge

If you’re hoping to capture a photo on the famous Festvågtind rock ledge, be prepared for an extra challenge. From the Festvågtind summit, you’ll need to head in the opposite direction of Henningsvær, towards the next peak. After descending a short distance, follow the path that leads toward the next mountain. The trail can be confusing as multiple paths branch out, but you’ll need to head towards a small bridge you can spot below.

After descending a steep section (about 15 meters), you’ll cross the bridge and climb back up on the other side. This part is dangerous and should only be attempted by experienced hikers. You’ll need to tackle a steep rock face, and then it’s about another 50 meters to the famous rock ledge. The path is challenging, so don’t underestimate it.
