How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Photoshoot – Tips from Your Photographer
Hey there! I’m Xenia, a 27-year-old photographer who specializes in outdoor photoshoots. Whether you're booking an engagement session, maternity shoot, or an adventure-inspired portrait session, I know that preparing for your shoot can feel a little overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time in front of the camera.
That’s why I’ve put together this guide full of practical tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to capture some amazing moments!
1. Best Time for Photos
The most magical light happens during golden hour—shortly after sunrise or just before sunset—giving you that warm, soft glow. If we’re shooting on a cloudy day, don’t worry! Overcast skies create beautiful, even lighting and help avoid harsh shadows.

2. Weather Prep – Be Ready for Anything!
Always check the forecast before your shoot! Here are a few quick tips for different conditions:
- Cold weather? Layer up! Bring a warm jacket to wear between shots.
- Hot & sunny? Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and bring sunglasses for in-between takes.
- Windy? Flowing dresses and loose hair can actually look stunning, but bring a brush or hair tie just in case.
- Rain? Light drizzle can give a cinematic touch to your photos. But if needed, we can reschedule or find a sheltered spot.

3. Choosing the Right Location
Think about the vibe you want for your shoot. Do you love mountains, beaches, forests, or cityscapes? I can suggest some great locations that fit your vision, or if you already have a special place in mind, let me know! The more personal the location, the more meaningful the photos ( like the first date, or the place you proposed...)

4. What to Wear for Outdoor Shoots
Your outfit plays a huge role in how your photos turn out! Here’s what works best:
✔ Neutrals, earth tones, and soft colors—they complement natural settings beautifully.
✔ Textures like knits, linen, and flowy fabrics add movement and depth.
❌ Avoid busy patterns or neon colors—they can be distracting and clash with nature.
Still not sure? Send me your options and I'll help you out.

5. What to Do with Your Hands
It’s totally normal to wonder what to do with your hands in photos. The key is to keep it natural and relaxed:
- Lightly touch your hair, adjust your clothing, or hold onto your partner (if it’s a couples shoot).
- Bring a prop like a coffee cup, hat, or scarf to give your hands something to interact with.
- Movement is your friend—walk, twirl, or even play with your outfit!
6. How to Avoid Feeling Awkward
Feeling a little camera shy? That’s completely normal! My goal is to make sure you have fun and feel comfortable. I’ll guide you through simple poses and movements, but the best shots happen when you just relax and enjoy the moment.
7. Extra Touches: Props & Personal Details
Bringing small props can make your photos even more personal and unique:
- Engagement Sessions: A bottle of champagne to pop, a cozy blanket for snuggly shots, or meaningful props like love letters.
- Maternity Shoots: Flowy dresses, baby shoes, or ultrasound pictures to celebrate the journey.
- Adventure Shoots: A backpack, hiking boots, or a favorite book can add personality and a storytelling element.
8. Footwear & Comfort
If we’re shooting in nature, wear comfortable shoes for walking. You can bring a second pair for the actual photos—maybe even go barefoot in the summer for a relaxed, natural look!
Let’s Make Your Photoshoot Fun & Stress-Free!
The most important thing? Enjoy yourself! Your photos will be a reflection of how you feel in the moment, so let’s keep it lighthearted, relaxed, and fun.
If you’re still unsure about outfits, locations, or overall vibes, create a Pinterest board with inspiration and share it with me. That way, I can help tailor the session perfectly for you! And I can add some idea to the board, what I've in mind.
