Starting the Journey: Parking and Getting Ready

There are several parking spots where you can begin your hike, most of which charge a fee of around 100 NOK. However, if you arrive early, you might find free parking, as we did. Keep in mind that even in mid-September, the area can get busy, so securing a parking spot early in the day is advisable.

From the parking area, head back towards the road and look for a red house with a Norwegian flag—this is where the trail begins, just before the forest on the left side.

The Hike to Kvalvika Beach and Ryten

The hike to Kvalvika Beach can be done as a round trip or a simple out-and-back route. While the round trip offers more variety, it’s also significantly more challenging. The direct route is well-trodden and easier to navigate, making it a good choice for families or those looking for a less strenuous hike.

As you ascend, the trail winds through scenic landscapes, passing a large lake where various paths from different parking areas converge. Some sections of the trail have been improved with wooden stairs, though not all parts are so well-maintained. Despite the steady incline, the hike is manageable and offers stunning views all along the way.

Reaching the Summit of Ryten

Once you reach the summit of Ryten, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the pristine Kvalvika Beach below—a stunning sight that makes the hike worthwhile. The beach, with its soft golden sands and turquoise waters, is considered one of the most beautiful in the Lofoten Islands.

Descending to Kvalvika Beach

To reach the beach, follow the path back a short distance, then take a steep descent towards the water. This section is the most challenging part of the hike but can be done safely with caution. Upon reaching the beach, take off your shoes and enjoy the sensation of the soft sand beneath your feet. The water is surprisingly warm, inviting you for a quick dip, though it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Continuing the Round Trip or Returning

If you choose to continue the round trip, be prepared for a more demanding trek. The path involves climbing over rocks to reach another beach, which is larger and equally beautiful. However, this section of the trail is tricky and should only be attempted if you feel confident in your hiking abilities. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, and navigating through a small forest and over large boulders adds to the challenge.

One downside to the round trip is that it ends on a road quite a distance from the parking area, meaning you’ll have to walk back along the road to reach your car. Given the difficulty of this route, many hikers may prefer to simply return the way they came after enjoying Kvalvika Beach and Ryten. And that's why we've been all alone.

Essential Tips for the Hike

  • Footwear: Wear waterproof hiking boots, as the trail can be muddy and slippery.
  • Gear: Bring swimwear and towel if you plan to take a dip at Kvalvika Beach. Also remember your sunscreen or rainjacket.
  • Provisions: Pack enough food and water, as there are no facilities along the trail.

Conclusion

The hike to Kvalvika Beach and Ryten is a must-do for anyone visiting Norway, offering some of the most spectacular views in the Lofoten Islands. Whether you choose the simple out-and-back route or the more challenging round trip, this adventure promises a rewarding experience amidst the stunning natural beauty of Norway.
