Planning Your Next Trip? Inspiration and Tips for Unforgettable Adventures

Who doesn’t love the excitement of planning their next trip? It’s one of the best feelings. But deciding where to go can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here are five extraordinary destinations, each unique and stunning in its own way. Plus, I’ve included tips to ensure your vacation is nothing short of amazing!

1. Laos – The Adventure Land for Backpackers

  • Best Time to Visit: November to February (dry season with pleasant temperatures).
  • Must-See Places:
    • Luang Prabang: A historic city with beautiful colonial architecture. From there, it’s a two-hour drive to Nong Khiaw, the perfect place for a multi-day hike. I recommend hiring a guide as there are still unexploded bombs in the area. Visit the Q-Bar & Restaurant for great food and accommodations. You can also book trips here. I recommend the guide "Than"—he speaks good English and shares extensive knowledge about the country, traditions, and more.
    • Kuang Si Waterfalls: Turquoise waters surrounded by lush jungle. You can go for a swim, and there’s even a bear sanctuary here!
    • Vang Vieng: Breathtaking karst landscapes and outdoor adventures. Don’t miss one of the cheapest hot air balloon rides available.
    • Bolaven Plateau: Coffee plantations, waterfalls, and serene nature.
    • Thakhek Loop: The ultimate motorbike trip, perfect for thrill-seekers and much less crowded than Vietnam’s Ha Giang Loop.
  • Gear Tips: Lightweight clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, a reliable daypack, a camera for capturing stunning landscapes, and a waterproof bag for unexpected rain.

    2. Albania – A Paradise for Hikers and Nature Lovers

    • Best Time to Visit: May to October (spring and fall are ideal for hiking).
    • Must-See Places:
      • Theth National Park: Untouched nature and charming mountain villages. This is a must for mountain enthusiasts. The landscape is breathtaking, with incredible hikes all around.
      • Llogara Pass: Stunning views of the Albanian Riviera.
      • Ksamil: Gorgeous beaches with turquoise waters, though slightly touristy. Visit the Butrint ruins to learn about Albanian culture. For less crowded beaches, head further north. A fantastic hike starts at Eskeree Beach and follows the coast, where you can camp in a tent at Saint Andreas Bay. If you’re lucky, you’ll have it all to yourself.
      • Berat: Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
      • Valbona Valley: One of Europe’s top hiking regions. I visited Albania in March but couldn’t reach it due to snow. It’s definitely a reason to return!
    • Gear Tips: We camped for a month in our tent, always asking locals for permission when near villages. Everyone was very friendly. It’s perfect for camping enthusiasts—just bring all your gear. Remember, you can’t take gas canisters on planes, so buy them locally.

      3. Tasmania – Australia’s Hidden Gem

      • Best Time to Visit: December to March (summer in Australia).
Tasmania is a perfect destination for van life. Camping spots are everywhere and easy to find, making it the easiest way to explore the island.
      • Must-See Places:
        • Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park: A hiker’s paradise with stunning views. It’s also the most famous spot on the island, offering a big multi-day hike where you can sleep in huts or tents.
        • Wineglass Bay: One of the most beautiful beaches in the world—absolutely stunning and a must-see.
        • Bay of Fires: Vibrant granite rocks and crystal-clear waters.
        • Tarkine Rainforest: The world’s oldest temperate rainforest. For moody photographers, this place is a dream.
        • Southwest National Park: A less-traveled area but my favorite as a mountain enthusiast. The rugged, gray landscapes are just perfect.
      • Gear Tips: Weatherproof clothing, hiking shoes, lightweight camping gear, a solar charger for long hikes, and good binoculars for wildlife spotting. Be prepared for constant weather changes—it’s possible to experience all four seasons in one day. But you’ll also see more rainbows here than anywhere else!

        4. Norway – The Land of the Northern Lights

        • Best Time to Visit: September to March (Aurora season).
If you’re coming solely for the Northern Lights, consider flying in and renting a car to explore. Be aware that snow and winter conditions can be extreme—locals use spiked tires. If you want a broader experience, van life is ideal for exploring Norway’s stunning camping spots. I recommend visiting after winter as the days grow longer and temperatures rise, while still having a chance to see the Northern Lights.
        • Must-See Places:
          • Tromsø: The capital of the Northern Lights. You could also book a tour to chase them or read my blog post about it: Northern Lights.
          • Lofoten Islands: Dramatic mountain landscapes and picturesque villages. It’s an epic, unbeatable destination for natural beauty.
          • Senja: Norway’s second-largest island, often called “Norway in Miniature.” I fell in love with its easy hikes and incredible views.
          • Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock): Iconic cliff overlooking the Lysefjord.
          • Not a place but a must-try: Kanelbullar (cinnamon buns)—available everywhere and absolutely delicious!
        • Gear Tips: Winter clothing in layers, a sturdy tripod, a wide-angle lens for Aurora photography, a headlamp, and a thermal mug for warm drinks. Download the Aurora app for tracking activity.

        5. Malaysia – An Underrated Paradise

        • Best Time to Visit: March to October (dry season, especially on the East Coast).
I recommend focusing on either Borneo or Peninsular Malaysia, as both are large and offer unique experiences. Staying in one area allows for a deeper exploration. Since everyone speaks English, Malaysia is a great destination for first-time backpackers. It's very affordable, it has a lot of Hostels but also beautiful Hotels.
        • Must-See Places:
          • Langkawi: Stunning beaches and a relaxed island vibe—a more affordable option than the East Coast.
          • Penang: Malaysia’s culinary capital with rich cultural diversity, coffee shops, and nightlife.
          • Cameron Highlands: Tea plantations and cool mountain air—a peaceful retreat.
          • Borneo: Home to orangutans and incredible rainforests.
          • Perhentian Islands: Perfect for diving and snorkeling.
        • Gear Tips: Lightweight clothing, a mosquito net, a waterproof camera, and snorkeling gear (or rent locally).
