Why I wouldn't go backpacking in Thailand anymore
Should You Backpack Through Thailand? My Honest Take After Two Visits
Hey there, adventurers! I’m 27, from Germany, and have been living on the road for the past four years, as a photographer and outdoor enthusiast. Backpacking has been a huge part of my journey. I stayed for 7 months in Asia and Thailand—where I’ve been twice, once at 19 and again at 25 — has left me with plenty of stories to tell. But is it the right destination for you? Let me break it down.

Why You Should Backpack Through Thailand
1. Perfect for First-Time Backpackers
If you’re just starting your backpacking journey, Thailand is a no-brainer. The backpacker scene is massive, and the moment you arrive, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people who are just as excited about exploring as you are. Hostels are like mini social hubs—you’ll meet fellow travelers over beers, board games, or hostel-organized tours.
Getting around is ridiculously easy, too. Whether it’s a tuk-tuk, an overnight train, or a ferry to the islands, Thailand’s travel network is seamless and affordable. You’ll never feel lost here.

2. Endless Adventures and Activities
Thailand is an adventurer’s playground. Here are some must-dos:
- Dive in Koh Tao: One of the best and most affordable places to get your scuba certification.
- Explore Temples: Wat Pho and Doi Suthep are just two of the many stunning temples to add to your list.
- Immerse in Nature: Kayak through mangroves, hike the lush jungles of Khao Sok, or take in the surreal limestone cliffs of Krabi.
- Party Vibes: Whether it’s the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan or rooftop bars in Bangkok, Thailand knows how to have a good time. Or rather go with the British team to Phuket.

3. Affordable and Luxurious
Backpacking doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort. Thailand’s affordability lets you enjoy luxury on a budget. Think beachfront bungalows, five-star hotels, and authentic Thai massages for a fraction of what you’d pay back home. Treat yourself without feeling guilty—you’ve earned it!

Why You Shouldn’t Backpack Through Thailand
1. Overrun by Tourism
If you’ve already spent time backpacking in less touristy countries, you might find Thailand a bit too commercialized. The main hotspots—like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, —can feel more like international party zones than authentic cultural experiences.

2. Searching for Authenticity?
Don’t get me wrong—Thailand has a rich and vibrant culture. But in popular areas, it’s easy to feel like you’re trapped in a bubble designed for tourists. To experience the “real” Thailand, you’ll need to veer off the beaten path, away from the crowds and Instagram hotspots. There're still a lot of amazing places that tourist don't even think of, but that makes it difficult to get around and most of those people don't speak english then. But you get a full on culture experience and it's always very excited.

3. Environmental Concerns
Let’s be real: mass tourism is taking it's toll. Iconic beaches like Maya Bay have been closed to recover from environmental damage caused by over-tourism. The sheer number of visitors has left its mark, and as travelers, we have a responsibility to tread lightly. Support eco-friendly initiatives and opt for sustainable travel choices whenever possible.

My Take
Thailand is stunning, welcoming, and full of opportunities to connect with people from all over the world. If you’re new to backpacking or just want a fun, social adventure, this is your place. But for seasoned travelers looking for untouched destinations or deep cultural immersion, Thailand’s well-worn backpacker trail might not hit the mark.
Whatever you choose, approach your trip with an open mind. Seek out quieter corners, respect the culture, and enjoy every moment. Whether it’s diving in turquoise waters, dancing under the moon, or trekking through misty mountains, Thailand can be as magical as you make it. And let's be honest the food is just soooooooo damn tasty.
